Making a Bow Drill in the Winter
Allan "Bow" Beauchamp
Photos and narrative by Allan "Bow" Beauchamp

Hi,

Sometimes when I'm out, here is where I'll look for my fire board materials, and it's a good spot.

I'll take a root for my fire board.

I look for some spindles and small fire boards as well in this fallen wind blow root system.

And in -29 below zero C. with no mitts or a knife ... one can still make a fire board.

Here I use what's around me from the snow areas or the underside of my fallen tree's roots to find all the materials and tools I will need to craft my fire board.

Here I'm making my spindle.

Here I've broken off a flake to craft my notch!

And here I'm testing the materials for my bow section. This one works well!

And when your all done, all you must do in the cold now is whirl away!

The best idea I have found is try and keep it small and simple. This worked well -- a root bearing block. Actually I used two smaller roots --  one for a fire board, the other the spindle!

Or, better than making a traditional fire board, try my " two stick fire board."

In the winter, this is the best option, I feel.

Good luck!
